Ans:
UNESCO has declared February 21 as International Language Day in 1999. This is a unique day and has a unique story and background. Bangladesh is the only nation that sacrificed lives and donated the blood of the tongue. February 21 was known as Shaheed Dibosh and after the proclamation of UNESCO it was known as World Language Day and more than 188 countries around the world celebrated this day.
They remember martyrs who gave up their lives. In 1952 Bangladesh was captured by Pakistan. And Pakistani rulers wanted to make 'Urdu' as the state language of Pakistani by force. And they announced that. But students at Dhaka University did not accept that.
They protested against the government and many students and ordinary people died there. Shahid Minar is a monument designed to honor them.
